History

Inroads was developed through a collaborative process between scholars, practitioners, and advocates. In the summer of 2013, an international group of scholars, practitioners, and advocates from six continents met in Bellagio, Italy, to discuss the role of stigma in the social, medical and legal marginalization of abortion around the world. Nineteen researchers, practitioners, and advocates from 11 countries participated in the meeting. The main purpose of this meeting was to produce clear objectives for research, programmatic work, and advocacy related to abortion stigma, and to identify a pathway for collective and global action toward understanding and ultimately reducing abortion stigma. As a result of this meeting, participants collaboratively developed a learning agenda to identify research, programmatic and advocacy objectives related to abortion stigma, and to identify a pathway for global action.

Inroads conducted a background assessment to inform the development of this network. The background assessment included interviews with key stakeholders, a scan of other networks, and a web-based survey of potential members in English, Spanish and French.
